Day 21 - Racetrack Day

Ok so the post before was getting too long so i'll make a new one. So today was racetrack day!

So my Aunt DeeDee was leaving today back to Vancouver (keep in mind i haven't seen her in 6 years). Anyways I thought she was leaving at around 2pm and I failed pretty hard and got up at like 1:15.... Called her right away and luckily she was still eating lunch near the hospital. So took record time getting ready and blitzed it to the restaurant.
Too bad.. it was freaking sunday. And all the ... uh... domestic helpers have their day off and they usually flood Central and Causeway Bay. My 10 minute walked turned into a 20 minute walk. I was about to Brandon Jacobs on them and run through them all but I kept civilized... So I said my goodbye to my Aunt who i'll miss dearly but had a great 3 weeks spending time with her. Hope to see you again soon Aunt DeeDee, come visit Toronto!

After that hopped on the subway with Mike, Despina and Jacky to go to the Shatin Racetrack.
Saw this dude doing kumon on the subway... Heh. Jacky tried to solve some of the problems... He failed.

Rainy day for the race track..
Mike Jacky and Despina
Jacky fully fobbing it out for the camera.

Ok.. so i've actually never been to the racetrack before (well except for that one time TIM, but there were no horses racing) so i really didnt know how it worked. Anyways its a pretty neat process. Before each race they display the horses so that you can analyze and judge them before the race.

This was our inital pick since this horse looked like it seriously was gonna eat the crowd. It was going ape shit and had blood red eyes like it had the T-virus from resident evil. (It didnt even place top 5... which shows our skills..)

However being the good accountants we are... we decided to hedge our bets so we bet on a whole slew of things.
Ok disclaimer now... the videos i'm posting today are
a) poorly shot.. cuz i'm fail like that
b) have extremely vulgar language (so if you're my family, everytime you hear a swearword its not me)
c) are quite non-sensical and made much more sense when we were there.

So in horse racing you can either (correct me if i'm wrong) buy
a) a horse to win outright
b) a horse to place first, 2nd or 3rd
c) a Quinella which basically means you would pick 3 horses with 2 of them to finish in the top 2.
These obviously scale with odds.

Anyways... The story of this video... is that we watched the first race and thought we won since we thoguht we bought Horse #7 to win outright... You can just watch the video to figure out what happens.
Oh right... I forgot we spoke a lot of chinese today. Essentially what happened is that we clearly did NOT buy horse #7 and were cheering like idiots for nothing..

We got there for race #7.. and there are 10 races in a day.

We went back to the drawing board....

After some more useless horse analysis, we noticed we were not only the loudest people talking about the horses but probably also the dumbest. Our comments and observations were probably all wrong... we tried analysis based on horse leg length, and weight... to more ridiculous ones like hairstyle and even uh... "endowment.." Anyways this was all fail since we lost both race 8 and 9. At this point we were about 650 HKD down the drain...

Oh yea heres Mike going nuts after losing race #9.

So obviously, it wasn't our fault we lost. We kept betting on a jockey who had a freaking poster on the wall of the stadium "Douglas Whyte." He kept losing. We decided to give him a piece of our mind..

This was already the censored version... We were gonna say much vulgar things but we were on camera so we toned it down a bit... heh.
But like you heard.. we were down to our final $160 HKD. So we bet on half the field...
6/14 horses.
We had money on mostly long shots.. with the longest being 45-1. Horse #7 Turf Express.

Well.. if the foreshadowing wasn't enough... Lets see where that $20 bet took us.

So after all the hugging, kissing and crying we finally won. Our terrible, useless, idiotic analysis paid off. We turned that $20 bet on Turf express into 900 bucks. So we ended up $250 HKD at the end of the day as opposed to almost 800 down. Yay us!

With the winning ticket.
So afterwards we all went for hotpot with more of jacky's friends. On the way there saw this guy standing alone in the middle of the street on a red light.... Nothing happened, I just thought it was amusing. He seemed so lonely.. trapped on the traffic island.
Round 1 of many rounds at Hot pot.
Jacky's buddy Alex ordered this nasty ass item... honestly... it was like an exploding ball of cheese which reminding and looked much like something else.... Look what it did to my teacup...
Gross

Anyways dinner was pretty sick. Quite full.. and it tasted pretty damn good. This was the same franchise as the one in Toronto "siu fai yeung" but this was way better and had much more selection.

Anyways this was a group picture taken by the most fail waitress ever. This was the best she could do and I honestly think she had never seen a camera before.... sigh picture taking skills negative 7.
The guy we asked after wasn't that much better but.. it'll suffice.

Anyways... after that we went to the arcade to kill some time before the night ended. Right now I just finished the Colts vs Chiefs game at Mike's house. Yes i miss football this much. I travelled all the way to Tseung Kwan O to watch NFL... Its now 4 in the morning and i'm dead tired.... I think i'm gonna watch the first half of the Saints game and call it a night.
Hopefully i'll get back on track with regular updates.

Later Days!

  1. That was a pretty funny fail on the first race but the last one was intense.
